![]() ![]() This may sound obvious but it’s worth mentioning here. Once you set specific speed, stick to it. Just remember, the finger determines the speed of your reading, not the other way around. The finger will determine your speed making it easy to speed up or slow down when necessary. Just use your finger to trace under each line as you read along. This will occupy your mind with a simple activity so there’s no other way for you to read than to use only your eyes – which is the true secret of speed reading. Something like: “1 2 3 4 5” or “a e i o u”. The easiest trick around this is to repeat something else instead. The goal is to read with your eyes, not with your mouth. Whenever you find yourself repeating the words in your mind or out loud you are significantly decreasing the speed of your reading. This is the thing that really slows us down. Thanks to these tricks I’m able to read one book every week just by spending a couple of hours on Sunday. I’ve done some research and come up with a list of 7 critical elements of speed reading. That’s where speed reading comes into picture. It is obvious that there are only so many hours in a day, so if I want to be able to read more I have to learn to read faster. In fact, there’s so many of them that I don’t have enough time to enjoy them all. And soon I discovered that a different breed of books exists too – books that are extremely interesting. Then I finished school and went my own path. (Well, it can’t be my fault, can it?) You see, it’s difficult to enjoy reading when every book your teacher throws at you is of no interest to you whatsoever. Studies continue, sponsored by organizations like the National Dyslexia Research Foundation and Haskins Laboratories – and here at 7 Speed Reading we’ll continue to keep you up to date on the latest news and discoveries related to speed reading.I was never a big fan of reading… I blame it on the education system, of course. Children who seem to have slower reading speeds, whether or not they’ve been diagnosed with dyslexia, will be able to train their eyes and their minds to process information more quickly, especially using the speed reading technique called “chunking.” Because the brain can be trained to function in a certain way, it’s important to start this process early. Of course, not all slow readers have dyslexia, but the practice of speed reading techniques that help slow readers improve their reading rates may also help dyslexics. This would seem to correspond with the reduced comprehension experienced by people with dyslexia. ![]() As we’ve mentioned before, slow reading speed actually reduces comprehension. This raises an interesting question with regard to speed reading. Of course, since we’re talking about neural connections and signals, the concept of “so much time” is a matter of milliseconds, not minutes, but in the hyper-fast world of the brain’s nerve impulses and signals, that can be a very long time indeed. In other words, it takes so much time for the first sound to be processed that it’s forgotten before the next one is processed. People with dyslexia frequently confuse similar word sounds like ta and da, and some researchers believe this is because their brains are not moving quickly enough to recognize one sound before being presented with the next one. The main factor in dyslexia is phonological processing, the breaking down of words into sounds, and then relating those sounds to letters. One theory currently being discussed is whether or not people with dyslexia actually have brains that work more slowly in general, processing all information at a reduced speed, and not just those functions related to reading. Scientists continue to study the problem of dyslexia (a learning disability that affects a person’s ability to read) and how it relates to overall brain function, genetic factors, and biological and environmental influences.
